Is the only way to inspect the gear leaver and linkage to drop the engine and drive train? Is it possible to gain enough access for inspection (and maybe replacement) any other way - maybe by removing trim and panelling around the tunnel? Any first hand experience or photos would be much appreciated Thanks in advance C

Have a look at a post I made about gear lever play .You can get access from the top of the tunnel . I removed the gear lever and changed the plastic saddle clip that fits on the gearbox selector .Made a lot of difference to selecting gears . Just put loads of grease on everything when it all goes back in .

There should actually be 2 saddles, one on gearbox side and also one on the remote side where the gear stick itself slots in, will make it nice tight and as Graham said you should be able to get access by taking off the top part of the tunnel, although this depends on how many parts the tunnel top is in.

Sorry mate I thought I'd posted about it . This is what I found , did to my remote . Got a new saddle clip (ebay ) , I had the all in one cover over the tunnel ,I cut off the top and found thin alloy plate covering the gear shift and hand brake area . It was just duck taped on . removed gaershift /remote and found the welds had broken on the remote (see pics ) also because its the westfield remote it only has 1 saddle clip between the stick and the lever . Just loads of grease to make it a smooth action . Uploaded with ImageShack Graham

Thanks Phil I spotted your blog but hadn't found the pictures of the gear change - car looks awesome BTW! I have now discovered that the linkage is the basic Tiger one from waaayy back i.e. new gear stick held at base by rose joint, two strips of bar bolted to new gear stick and then bolted through cut down gear box shaft. Now I can see it I think every little bit has at least 1 mm play which, when amplified by the linkage, explains the slackness of the gar change!!! On the pictures is that the RD extension or one from another supplier? Thanks C

Hi Chris, I had the original Tiger setup which can be made to work well with a bit of adjustment and lots of grease but I did change to a RD extension with a quick shift lever from Burtons, depending where the bottom of your dash sits you may have to put a bend in the new lever.

Thanks for the info, I've just bought the RD extension mechanism as I can't see the original Tiger one being any good even I manufacture something with bearings and proper fitting bushes etc. All I need to do now is get a gear lever ha ha. Will keep you posted of progress.....must search out that post that talks about how to post photos (was it Grahams?)

Rally Designs extension in, gear lever welded up (thanks to the lads at PRS in Salford) feels so sweet all gears seems to be where they should be when stationary! Hope the weather is up for it at the weekend and I can see if it is as good as it feels. Thanks again for the advice and recommendations guys. C
