It's me and my never ending saga again.... Having removed the old 'Mountney' style steering wheel and boss, I have fitted a Momo D wheel and a new boss from Demon Tweeks with the correct hexagonal opening for the Sierras shaft.
All went well..until I tried to turn on my ignition. Locked. The key will not turn.
Have tried the usual 'rock it gently in gear' etc, to no avail.
Any tips fellas?

If you take the boss off paul it should have slots in it around the edge this is for the steering lock . It should line up with a peg that comes out when the key is out . Also try the key with everything removed , have you had the barrel lock out ? Theres a plastic piece that fits into the boss to cancel the indicators that has to locate in the boss too .

Hi Graham.. Thanks for the advice. No, I haven't removed the barrel, or the indicator stalk, etc.
I removed only the upper part of the boss, (one retaining nut and earth lead for horn), and using the temporarily replaced s/wheel, jiggled it off the shaft.
I then replaced this with a conversion kit boss from Demon, which fits onto the hexagonal steering column of the Sierra, and allows for aftermarket Mono type wheel to be fitted. I just replaced the retaining nut. (Will have to rewire the horn through a flasher switch or something)
Thought it would be an easy enough job....but now I'm beginning to remember why I steered (no pun intended) clear of anything Ford for all those years, using Minis as my preferred base for motorsport and kit cars.
Is there something on the old upper boss I removed which is preventing the ignition key from turning? I can't see how, as there is distance.....

Hi Graham. Think I've cracked it. There's a lug at the top of the column, and I don't think I'd located the boss onto it correctly. It was your suggestions which started me looking.
All seems OK now...the boss is on, the snap-off release is on, and still the key is turning fine, and firing up. Yet to put the steering wheel on, but looking good.
System oil pressure test next, to see if my gauge is duff, if so fit a new one, and it's on the road! It's all cosmetic after that..wheels, seats, colour.....
Thanks again. I need to post before and after pics when all is done...but in the meantime, a tatty E1 should be ready for any run outs.
