MOT passed, bit borderline on the emissions - blue smoke on acceleration. Previously checked compression and all OK guess its either valve guides or the valve stem oil seals - now using this as excuse to take the head off and see what's going on in general! Might also consider grinding a bit of the head away and fitting a Megajolt ignition.
SO here are the questions please guys:- 1. Do you think I am right in assuming that the blue smoke is simply the valve stem oil seals? 2. It looks easy (ish) to take off some excess metal from the heads, according to the books that is - has anyone tried to do this themselves? 3. Is £400 for the Megajolt a good investment? 4. Daft question but does it come with a default map so I can get to the tuning place? 5. I've seen reference to AB Garage, Deeside on the forum (Graham even has pictures!) would you recommend them for this work? 6. Any idea of what I should expect to pay for such a tune?
Sorry guys, got carried away with the questions, any help or advice gratefully received. Thanks in advance Chris

Only joking feller 1. valve stem seals generally give off a lot of smoke when you first start her up oil drips down through the seals when its stood could be your piston rings 2. don't even try to skim the head unless you have a jig to do so 3.Yes 4.yes 5.Adrian is a knowledgeable and talented chap and certainly knows his stuff I've had lots done and trust him implicitly I would Highly recommend him and he is very reasonable on costs.

Thanks Trev I initially suspected the rings but the compressions was +10bar when I tested it so not so sure. I was thinking of opening out the ports in the head myself. I have nowhere near the skills or the equipment to skim the head although that's another question... is it worth getting a few thou skimmed off to raise the compression ratio a bit? C

Hi Chris if you skim the head to much the engine will over heat quicker. Clive

Thanks Rick, just had a look on the website and it looks good - easier to install, a few more features etc than the Megajolt and about the same £. Have you got one fitted? Does anyone else out there have experience of the Nodiz? The Megajolt seems to the the norm but if there is good feedback about the Nodiz I might give it a try. Thanks C

For anyone interested....... Head now off and gone to supplier at work who will do some porting for me - ended up thinking I would probably not do a good job :-) and he does cylinder heads for us for a living. Also going to take 60 thou off head. As it's a favour might take a while so thinking about stripping Weber - when I bought it the guy was about to do the same so gave me o'haul kit. Maybe there was a message there. Nodiz ignition kit purchased, ouch - don't tell the wife Tooly! Spoken to dyno people and price seems really good vfm but might need to take day off work to get a slot when I want. Made myself a cam timing disc so only need to buy venier camshaft pulley now - Graham the one on ebay you pointed me at went for more than a new one! Will keep up posted, for those that are interested.......... C

I had that , I was bidding for a dizzy to replace my old one . I wanted it to fit in place to just drive the oil pump . I got a NEW one for less money in the end .

At last the head is coming back today! Checked TDC of the cylinders match the timing mark on the crankcase - seems pretty much spot on, not sure why there is so much about doing it in the forums etc. Graham did you remove the works of the dizzy and put a blanking plate on top (maybe carrying the coil pack like a photo I've seen?)or have you retained the whole dizzy Looking forward to getting it back on the road although this will probably be the kiss of death for the nice weekends we have been having. Tooly it also means you will be getting you valve compressor back shortly :-)

Thanks Graham but searching on the whole string or even redundant or dizzy don't return anything for me! C
